BLUEFIELD, WV (WOAY) – Medical cannabis dispensaries have started the application process to operate in the county following a recent decision by the Mercer County Health Department.
Mercer County was initially the only county in the state to deny the medical cannabis business for the county’s operations. As of last month, the Mercer County Board of Health has reversed previous government decisions on the matter.
The City of Bluefield has been a key proponent of getting these businesses into operation in the county and District Attorney Colin Cline is pleased with the progress made.
“Of course we are happy that this is happening. Our position was that we spoke to our local health authority not to speak out against medical cannabis organizations coming to this county, ”said Cline.
Two companies have applied for permits. One of them is Holistic WV Farms LLC, based in Washington DC, which has already been approved as a grower in Raleigh County. The other business is Princeton WV Retail LLC.
Cline says the city is excited to finally see the benefits of medical cannabis in Mercer County.
“We’re looking at it from a two-pronged perspective. First, we think the law is a good law. We want our citizens to have access to the therapeutic benefits of medical cannabis. And the second, of course, is an economic development perspective. “
It is not yet known where the two companies will be based in the county if this is approved.
